This two-stage project at Saunders Street, Pyrmont is an excellent example of the use of architectural precast concrete cladding. Very visible from the ANZAC Bridge which is a major gateway to the CBD from the west, the building had to satisfy the rigorous requirements of Planning NSW which controls development in the Pyrmont precinct as well as the specific requirements of the tenants and the developer for a functional and economical building of subtlety and elegance. It was completed in 1999.

A facade was required which could be detailed to reflect the heritage of the area, which was elegant, which would resist the pollution from 100,000 cars passing daily and which could be easily cleaned. The solution was a polished reconstructed stone precast concrete facade supplied by Hanson.

The first stage was constructed for Network Ten Limited and incorporated their specific requirements as well as being constructed so that, if necessary, it could be converted for more conventional office occupancy in the future. To achieve that Hanson was able to detail and manufacture solid wall panels which can have windows installed in the future relatively easily. Hanson was also able to propose configuration changes which improved quality and reduced cost without affecting the architectural design. The number of panels were reduced, the waterproofing simplified and production and erection costs lowered.

The second stage consists of office accommodation as well as a convenience store and a childcare centre.

Hanson completed an exhaustive sample process in order to satisfy the architect's and Planning NSW colour requirements. The two stages have different but complementary coloured panels. This was achieved by the use of different fine and coarse aggregates and oxides.

Nettleton Tribe were the architects for both stages of the project. Director Jeremy Bishop believes that the use of polished precast concrete was crucial to achieving Planning NSW approval for the facade and for achieving the high quality environment required by the owner and Network Ten. The client, Macquarie Goodman Pty Ltd, is very pleased with the appearance of the building, as are the tenants. Network Ten has praised the appealing and highly accessible environment of the development.

The first stage of City West Office Park won the Property Council of Australia NSW and National Awards for Suburban office buildings and business parks. These prestigious awards confirm the pre-eminence of polished precast concrete for building facades and its successful use on this project in particular.

Hanson staff are available to assist with feasibility and design development for any use of architectural precast concrete.
