A variety of finishes may be produced directly off the mould. Such finishes fall into two broad categories
- Plain, flat and smooth surfaces,
- profiled, grooved and sculptured surfaces.
Plain, flat and smooth surfaces are amongst the most difficult to produce because of the problems they present with colour control and rectification of accidental soiling and damage. In practice they are best suited to receive a paint or other applied finish, in which case they become a very economical panel.
It is recommended that wherever possible, off-form surfaces should be modulated by profiling, grooving or sculpturing. Such techniques improve appearance by developing a pattern of light and shade on the surface. This, in turn, will minimise any minor discolouration problems and provide improved in-service weathering.
There are many techniques for providing patterns or other effects with off-form finishes.
